Q: What do I need to do to access the Tufts network via my wireless network connection?

You need an appropriate wireless network card certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance that supports at least the 802.11g protocol, a web browser, and a Tufts UTLN and password to register your wireless device. For best performance UIT recommends purchasing 802.11n "dual-mode" adapters (those which also support 802.11g and 802.11a). You'll need to register the first time you use the network and registration is good for one year. The first time you open a web browser, you'll be automatically guided through the registration process.

Q: Is the Tufts wireless network secure?

No. While access to the Tufts wireless network is limited to users with valid usernames and passwords, the wireless network does not implement encryption. The traffic you send or receive may be seen by others using the network, just as is the case at most wi-fi hot spots in public locations like coffee shops and airports. We strongly recommend you use encrypted communications that protect your data from eavesdropping, such as HTTPS, secure IMAP, SSH, and secure FTP.

Q: What type of wireless networks are deployed at Tufts and what type of wireless card should I purchase for use on the Tufts wireless networks?

Tufts currently supports 802.11g and 802.11a. In Boston 802.11n is available in all buildings with wireless except for Jaharis.
Most users will want to purchase a laptop that includes support for 802.11a and 802.11bg. If purchasing a card that supports 802.11n please be sure that it is a "dual-band" card that supports both 802.11a and 802.11bg. The fastest speeds on 802.11n are only available on cards that also support 802.11a.

Q: How can I request wireless networking in my area?

Q: Can I set-up my own wireless network at Tufts?

No. This is forbidden by the University Acceptable Use policy. For details please see the wireless policy. Please contact Network Engineering (NOC) if you have any questions.
