Q: What do I need to do to access the Tufts network via my wireless network connection?

You need an appropriate wireless network card (802.11g or a/b/g), a web browser, and a Tufts UTLN and password to register your computer. You'll need to register the first time you use the network and registration is good for one year. The first time you open a web browser, you'll be automatically guided through the registration process.

Q: If only valid Tufts users are able to use the wireless network, does that mean it's secure?

No. The login process is only used to limit access to the Tufts' network by unauthorized users from the wireless network. However, the radio airwaves are public. There is no way to control or even know, who is listening to traffic on the wireless network. You should always be very careful about the data you send and receive over any wireless network.

Q: What "type" of wireless networks are deployed at Tufts and what type of wireless card should I purchase for use on the Tufts wireless networks?

Tufts currently supports 802.11bg. In wireless areas of the Medford campus 802.11a is also available. Select areas of the Boston campus also support 802.11n. Most users will want to purchase an 802.11abg or 802.11abgn card.

Q: How can I request wireless networking in my area?

Q: Can I set-up my own wireless network at Tufts?
