Now based on an operating system of BSD descent, Mac OS X provides the power and security challenges associated with Unix. Essentials include strong passwords, and the following steps to place a system on the network

  1. Secure the computer before you place it on the 'Net.
  2. Patch it so that it won't be a target.
  3. Back it up and practice recovering.
  4. Now you can put it on the network.
  5. Keep the computer updated with the latest software versions.
  6. Keep up-to-date on applications; watch for security alerts for ssh, openssl.
  7. Monitor logs if the host is a server.
  8. Keep your recovery tools, backups and images up-to-date.
