- Federal Trade Commission (FTC): Your National Resource for ID Theft provides information on what to do if you suspect your personal information has been stolen.
- FTC Your Access to Free Credit Reports explains your rights and answers questions on how to request free reports. The FBI and a number of organizations recommend that you order them one at a time, one every four months, rotating between the three credit agencies.

- Personal requests for one free report each year from each of the three credit agencies are treated differently than bank/corporate requests and will not adversely effect your credit rating. In fact its field is now used to see how many individuals request histories - still very few which is why terrorists can get away with stealing identities to launder money.
