Configuring DHCP for Macintosh Classic

These instructions are technical and intended for FSPs. If you are a do-it-yourself type, please read these closely and remember that you may call your FSP for assistance.

1. Under the Apple Menu,icon choose the Control Panels folder icon and look for items called TCP/IP and AppleTalk. (If you don't see these, contact your FSP) Open the AppleTalk control panel. From the Connect via pull down menu, choose Ethernet. Close the AppleTalk control panel and save when prompted.

1a. If TCP/IP and AppleTalk are not in the main Control Panels folder, choose the Network Control Panel. Click on Ethernet, then close the panel and save when prompted.

2. Under the Apple Menu,control panel choose the Control Panels folder, cpicon then TCP/IP.

3. From the TCP/IP control panel's Connect via pull down menu, choose Ethernet. If you have two NICs, choose Ethernet Builtin. From the Configure pull down menu, choose "Using DHCP Server". Close the TCP/IP control panel and, when prompted, save the changes. If you are running MacOS 8.x or 9.0 on an iMac, iBook, G3 or G4, go to the next step. Otherwise, you will need to restart to activate DHCP and then skip to step 5.

4. If you are running MacOS 8.x on an iMac, iBook, G3 or G4, you need to configure your machine to release its DHCP lease on shutdown. This requires installation of an additional control panel, TCP/IP Options, that is available in the Open Transport 2.0.3 Extras folder on the 8.6 CD-ROM or from asu.info.apple.com on the Web. Once the control panel is installed, make sure the "Don't retain DHCP lease on shutdown" box is checked; leave the others blank as shown below. You can now restart your machine and proceed to step 5.

5.Open a Web browser and you should get the Pelican self-registration page. You may self-register your computer on the Tufts Data Network by using your Trumpeter Email Account and Password, then reading and accepting the Responsible Use Policy. If you are authorized to self-register, a seco nd screen redisplays your information and a registration button to click. The last screen advises you to power off your computer, wait 15 mintues and then login.
